Many of its practioners are drawn to the art because of its emphasis on applying submission techniques without injuring the attacker. This can be, in particular, of interest to law enforcement personnel. Aikido was founded by "O-Sensei" (Morihei Uyeshiba) in the mid-twentieth century and the art is derived from many martial influences such as jujutsu and kendo.
