African slavery touched many shores over two hundred years ago and Brazil was no different. Born out of slave revolts was the formation of African communities and with it, the martial art of Capoeira. The art of Capoeira makes use of African music and takes on a unique "dance" quality. Some believe that this "dancing" was done to preserve the art and disguise it from the slavemasters. The "dance" or "game" is expressed amongst a circle of Capoeiristas, or practitioners of Capoeira. This is known as a Roda. From there, two participants express their martial arts and dance skill which incorporates very "flashy" and athletic acrobatics. Return to Martial Arts Styles Mainpage. |
