Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu took North America by storm in the 1990's with the art's proficiency demonstrated by the Gracie's in The Ultimate Fighting Championships. The result of these no holds barred competitions was the realization that stand-up striking arts were vulnerable to the groundfighting techniques of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an adaption of its Japanese sister art, Jujitsu. Japanese immigrants in the early 20th century brought their native art to Brazilian shores and the rest, as they say, is history. Pioneers such as Carlos and Helio Gracie took, what they considered, the most useful elements of this Japanese art and created an artform which focused on the use of leverage with a high degree of groundfighting technique. It is no secret that a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu stylist's aim is to bring an opponent to the ground. Once there, tremendous leverage is used to apply a submission technique in the form of a joint lock or choke.
