Nevertheless, it remains an effective means of self-defense by virtue of its simple, yet versatile, hand strikes and its powerful front kicks. Kickboxing has distinct similarities to traditional Western Boxing and it also has the flavor of Muay Thai, although Kickboxing does not stress the close range knee and elbow strikes that Muay Thai does. Kickboxing does rely on quick footwork and its punching combinations to wear down an opponent and does not make use of any grappling techniques. Unlike traditional eastern martial arts, Kickboxing does not practice the internal or spiritual exercises found in most eastern arts and focuses only on the physical training. Kickboxers use boxing gloves, foot guards, groin protection, and mouth guards when competing or training. Return to Martial Arts Styles Mainpage. |
