Metabolism

Let us start off by saying that the body is a lot smarter than we give it credit for. For example, by starving your body, you have, in essence, programmed (or "taught") it to conserve energy...kind of like your body's way of saving for a rainy day. The body learns this from experience...the experience gained by starving it off key nutrients. A side effect of this energy conservation mode is a lower basal metabolic rate (the rate at which we burn calories at rest). This represents calories burned by bodily functions and muscle tissue but does not represent calories burned by activity. Therefore, someone with a slow metabolism burns less calories at rest than someone with a high metabolism.

How can we get our bodies out of this energy conservation mode? Eating is a good start. By eating FREQUENTLY, we not only keep a steady flow of nutrients flowing into our body, however, we keep the body in a consistent thermogenic state, in other words, we improve the body's ability to maintain a constant energy burning state and NOT exist in an energy conservation state. Instead of three large meals per day, eat at five or six smaller meals spread evenly throughout the day.

You may find it interesting that some of those who have lost several pounds of weight have NOT done much to change their body's composition. What I mean is that they are definitely lighter, however, much of the weight lost was muscle and NOT fat...the ratio of body fat to muscle has not changed or, in many cases... even increased!. The problem, from an athletic performance point of view is simple; less muscle means decreased strength, speed, and yes...even agility...in spite of the weight loss. Over and above these benefits that having muscle carries with it, it also acts as a calorie-burning furnace in our bodies. Muscle, just by existing in your body, adds to your metabolism and gives you a very natural fat burning tool. Without that muscle to burn those calories, excess calories go straight to fat storage...ever wonder why some weight loss miracles reverse themselves within weeks? Starving the body of nutrients resulted in a slowing effect on the metabolism thus increasing the body's chances of storing fat.
