Services: Community Phone/Fax/Email Us Shopping/Merchandise: Books & Videos Home Pankration has roots back to ancient Greece and was the ancient version of what we know today as no holds barred fighting. The art's name is derived from the Greek terms "Pan" and "Kratos" which translates into "Total or Complete Strength". Ancient Olympiads bore witness to wrestlers and boxers pitting their skills against one another and, ultimately, to the training of a complete fighter who could combine both striking and grappling skills. Pankration, although the multi-disciplined concepts it teaches are familiar, remains an obscure art in North America. Organized Pankration matches are held in some parts of Europe where full-contact fighting is allowed with protective equipment used. In spite of its anonimity, it remains a versatile martial art which makes use of boxing, throwing, takedowns, and groundfighting techniques. Return to Martial Arts Styles Mainpage. |
