Sambo (also known as Sombo) is a martial art which originated in Russia and eventually became the official wrestling sport for the entire Soviet Union. The term "SAMBO" is derived from the Russian phrase : Samozashchita Bez Oruzhiya which means "Weaponless Self-Defense". Sambo is practiced in a Sport form as well as a Combat form. Combat Sambo, for example, is used extensively in the Russian military for hand to hand combat training. Simply put, Combat Sambo stresses self-defense more than its sporting counterpart.
Like other martial arts such as Jujutsu and Judo, Sambo practitioners make use of several submission holds and throws. However, Sambo is very much known for its attacks to the limbs, in particular, to vulnerable leg joints such as the knee and ankle.
Sambo practitioners also wear Sambo shoes (sambofki) and a traditional red Sambo jacket (kurtka) along with red shorts and belt.
