Post-Renaissance France saw the emergence of a style of fighting which incorporated the use of Savate's coup de pied bas (low-line kicks) and strikes. Later on, high kicks were introduced as was the continued refinement of its hand strikes found in boxing. It should be noted that just across the channel, the English were mastering their own form of boxing and it is regarded that Savate boxing technique was derived, in part, from this influence. The art of Savate makes use of several lunging hand-strikes and kicks. This defining quality of Savate is owed to the influence of fencing. Savate is practiced with boxing gloves and such, is strictly a striking art. It is relatively unknown in North America and schools which teach this art are, indeed, hard to find.
